There are a lot of great features in Dfx, namely the fact that their 2000+ library simulates specialized lenses, optical lab processes, film grain, and even Tiffen's physical glass filters. It's compatible with virtually all of the popular post-production software, like Adobe Premiere and, Final Cut Pro, Avid, Blackmagic Resolve, Nuke, and more. Version 4 of Dfx comes with a host of upgrades and add-ons, including GPU acceleration, Retina Display support, and a bunch of new plugins, like 'grunge', 'cartoon', and 'Harris Shutter', which uses separate images for the red, green and blue channels. Forget the bad marketing, think of it more as a correction/match too plus tons of tools that work w/ awesome results. The terminology used is geared towards established processes, like 3-strip or deband(but actually works). Another neat trick is to put one of its filters on last and let it work its 16bit processing magic on results from the whole stack. While It does offer some characteristics and management of halation, it does not replace physical filters on lenses. That said, its Black Pro-Mist emulation ain't too shabby.
To think of it another way, DFX has tons of tools to help match shots taken from different cameras, with different lenses at different times of day. DFX is also useful tool for emulating traditional film processes. I used it last year to rework some DSLR video from years ago and was amazed by the results I was able to get out of it by using DFX. (I'm actually using DFX on a segment i'm rendering right now as I write this). DFX does offer stock emulation, but it isn't great in that department. I use FilmConvert for that or just a generic LUT loader.
