Have been making since the 1950s, and are one of the most famous names in the guitar world. Along with Gibson, they pioneered the introduction and growth of, and they also have made a wide range of acoustic models over the years. While they haven't been in the business of making for as long as, say, Martin or Gibson, their instruments are broadly regarded as being well-made, and cover all market sectors, from basic beginner to customised professional. General Stylings Although many of the Fender acoustic guitars follow traditional lines, the company has been known for a number of stylistic and practical features that fall outside the mainstream of acoustic guitar construction. On one of their earliest models, the Fender King (later renamed as the Kingman) from 1963, they incorporated the bolt-on neck design that had previously been used on their ranges of electric guitars and bass guitars. This went against the prevailing method of having the neck glued to the body, and with Fender's novel approach came the need to add structural rigidity, this being accomplished by the addition of a metal 'tone bar' or 'resonance bar' running through the body.

This feature alone should make the King or Kingman easily recognisable, so remember to check. The vast majority of acoustic guitars from other makers incorporate a headstock with the machine heads grouped in two sets of three. Fender is, perhaps, the only manufacturer to release an acoustic guitar with the headstock in a similar style to their electric guitars (specifically the Stratocaster), with all six machines arranged along the top edge. They've also been known for another unique design, termed the 'hockey stick' style of headstock, predominantly used on their 12-string models.

The Stratocaster-style headstock was used on virtually all of the acoustics of this early period, and in the view of some commentators and collectors, this made for a visually unappealing combination. Early and Vintage Models Fender entered the acoustic market in 1963 with a range of four models, the King, Concert, Classic, and Folk. All but the Classic and Folk models featured the Stratocaster-style headstock mentioned above, and, unusually for acoustics, had screw-on pick guards, an item which was routinely glued into place by other makers. A large number of other models followed, including a distinctive model named the Wildwood, with coloured woods created by the injection of dye into still-growing trees, prior to harvesting. Model names from this era include the Malibu, Village, Palomino and Concert. Some models were also made in 'Wildwood' variants, using the same dyed wood as on the Wildwood model itself. Fender was bought over by CBS in 1965, and very little innovation or development took place after that date.
